Kneale started diving in 2021, taking his first Open Water class because he wanted to go scuba diving on a cruise. Blue Lake is an excellent diving spot - but not so much for swimming. Because of the surrounding wetlands and lack of access points, swimmers may be unable to access shallow areas.

Beaver Dam® Dive Shop’s Dive with Gentle Giants

Recently Kathy Shaw, Shawna Wright (me) along with Randy Lewis (& his lovely family) and Beth Schmidt made the journey to Atlanta, Georgia to dive with Whale Sharks at the Georgia Aquarium .

After checking in, our non-diving trip attendees were whisked away for their own very thorough back-stage tour of the aquarium. The remaining divers were given a comprehensive rundown of the Ocean Voyager exhibit, the largest tank in the world, teeming with thousands of aquatic wonders. We then went through a safety briefing, emphasizing the importance of respecting the animals and maintaining a calm demeanor in the water.

We suited up and got ready to go, then we descended into the crystal-clear waters of the tank. The first sight that took my breath away (besides the sheer immensity of the tank itself) was the majestic whale shark gliding effortlessly past us. Its spotted pattern and gentle movements were awe-inspiring.

The next 30 minutes were pure magic. We swam alongside the whale shark, manta rays, and a kaleidoscope of colorful fish. The dive team expertly guided us, ensuring we got close-up views of these magnificent creatures while maintaining a safe distance. The feeling of sharing space with such a diverse selection of marine creatures was amazing!!

The highlight for me was coming face-to-face with the whale shark. Its enormous size was humbling, yet its gentle demeanor instilled a sense of peace. It was a privilege to share the water with this gentle giant.

The entire experience was expertly managed by the Georgia Aquarium staff. Their knowledge and passion for these animals were evident throughout the program.

Being able to share this experience with Kathy, Randy & Beth was an amazing opportunity for me! We shared dinner together that evening and got to know everyone a bit better. We explored Centennial Park and took pictures with the Olympic Rings.

If you're ever looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I highly recommend the "Journey with Gentle Giants" program at the Georgia Aquarium. It's a truly unique opportunity to connect with these incredible creatures and gain a deeper appreciation for the underwater world!

Memorial Day 2024: A Storm to Remember

Memorial Day is a day to honor the US soldiers who have died serving their country. It is a long weekend and the unofficial start to the summer season. In Arkansas at Beaver Lake, we kicked off the start of the summer diving season. We had the RV park ready for campers and the hotel booked. The pool was sparkling and we held our first scuba class! The weather on Saturday was beautiful. Sunny and warm, but not to hot. The lake was cool, but the visibly was close to 15’! Boaters and Jet Skis were abundant with campers cooking up brats and burgers. Children were enjoying their new water toys and soaking up the sun. We enjoyed a BBQ at the dive shop, welcoming back friends and catching up after the long winter break. But a storm was brewing…

Living in Arkansas, we are not immune to thunderstorms and tornados. May is the wettest month of the year, averaging 6.3”. This helps fill up Beaver Lake and supply the drinking water for the Northwest Arkansas region, serving more than 450,000 customers. This storm swept through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kentucky. We knew it was coming…we just didn’t know the severity. My husband and I were awakened at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday to our phones shrieking to warn us of a Tornado Warning! We quickly put on our shoes and ran through the rain and hail to the bath house. We found 3 other campers closely monitoring the storm with minute-by-minute updates from the local weather channel. Slowly, other campers joined us, along with a few anxious pups. We laughed and nervously chatted while we waited out the storm, the strength in numbers easing our anxiety slightly. After about 40 minutes, we slowly made it back to our campers to wait out the rest of the night, but Mother Nature wasn’t quite finished. The wind came up again, shaking our campers and nerves. I can’t say for sure how long the wind blew (later determined to be 80 – 100 mph straight line winds) before it finally started to die down and we could get some rest.

As the sun came up, we slowly ventured out to assess the damage. The dive shop and campground did not have electricity, but our manager made coffee for everyone with her solar powered unit! Overall, we were lucky - some hail damage, downed limbs, but no major tree loss or structural damage. Other areas were not so lucky. Prairie Creek, Horseshoe Bend and Rocky Branch suffered major damage on the lake. It was confirmed that 7 tornados touched down in Benton County with one crossing over into Madison; 2 in Decatur, 2 in Centerton, 1 in Rogers, 1 in War Eagle, and 1 in Clifty with winds reaching up to 155 mph.

Roads were blocked with debris and stoplights were out, backing up traffic for blocks. Power poles split like toothpicks, leaving many without electricity in Rogers and Bentonville for 5+ days. Hundred-year-old trees were uprooted and laid on their side. Parts of Rogers are unrecognizable with buildings completely destroyed. Sadly, some lost their life early that Sunday morning and our hearts go out to their families. The Rogers and Decatur tornados will go down as the two largest in record in Arkansas, stretching over 1.5 miles wide. This will also go down as one of the costliest single storms for any county in the United States this year, due to the highly populated area.

The outpouring of volunteers has been overwhelming. Multiple locations have offered free places to lodge and free meals. Neighbors have helped cut down trees, remove fence, and haul away debris. It was not the Memorial Day we planned and it may not be the summer we planned either as the clean-up efforts continue, but it did bring us all together. As we slowly pick up the pieces and rebuild, we will lean on our neighbors and friends. We appreciate what we have and are grateful for our community. We love this place. We are Arkansas strong!

An Interview With a Registered Dietitian

Diving and your health go hand in hand – let’s learn more…

According to some insights from DAN, scuba diving exposes our body to extremely stressful conditions, such as hyperbaria, hyperoxia and cold water, which can increase energy expenditure and oxidative stress. Adequate nutrition is essential before an immersion, to improve our body’s responses to stress, delaying fatigue, and post-dive to accelerate recovery and reduce tiredness.

In addition to DAN, I reached out to Registered Dietitian Paula Wicklund, for some insights on diving and your health and overall nutrition.

Hydrate: Breathing compressed air is very drying and dehydrating. Drink water, sports drinks or fruit juice from 90 minutes to right before getting in the water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. This will prevent excessive fluid loss. After surfacing, fluids will help recovery and reduce dehydration symptoms, for instance tiredness, fatigue, and mild confusion. Note that it is strictly recommended that divers avoid alcohol, since it enhances fluid loss, and to limit salty food. Also, caffeine can increase diuresis, but coffee before a dive can stimulate and improve cognitive functions, so if it’s combined with drinking water it should not be a concern.

Balanced Diet: Nutritional recommendations for a diver don’t differ a lot from that of other active people. The ideal meal should be lightweight and easily digestible, and should include sources of complex carbohydrates (like cereals, rice or pasta) and fat (Greek yogurt, nuts, almonds, dark chocolate, and olive oil), fruits or vegetables, and water. Proteins (such as eggs, fish, legumes and meat) are required for tissues to recover correctly, but are usually best to consume during dinner, after a dive. Eat a good meal at least 2 hours before your dive and a balanced post dive dinner to restore your energy levels.

Remember to pack a snack to consume between dives to help restore fluids and energy. Nuts, fruits (such as bananas) and dark chocolate are all good choices. Remember to drink water! A snack can be enjoyed 30 minutes before your dive or between dives for an energy burst.

In conclusion, the best advice to enjoy your dives is to follow nutritional recommendations, be active and train, don’t smoke, limit alcohol, sleep the right amount of hours and most of all, respect the rules of diving.

Annual Gear Check-Up

Hello Divers!

I hope you are enjoying some down time. Are you anxious to get back in the water? In preparation for the upcoming season, there are items that you can easily do now to ensure smooth diving this summer.

Check your tank for the hydro date – required every 5 years.
Get your tank in for a visual inspection – required annually.
Check out your regulator – has it been a while since it has been serviced? Most reg sets need to be serviced annually. Check your manufacturer's instructions.
Make sure to change the batteries on your computer and transmitters.
Look over your wet suit and booties and repair them as needed.
Look over your BCD – any tears or cracks? Have our tech check it out for possible repairs.
Check your fins and mask straps – replacement straps are available at the shop.

Look for our opening in early March. We will be on site to service gear or answer any questions you may have. Proper preparation will prevent missed dives later! Don’t forget to stock up on defog and purchase an air card to save money!

Welcome 2024: Setting New Year’s Resolutions

What are your goals for the year…

It’s that time of year when we think about New Year’s Resolutions. One of the top resolutions is usually focused on health like a new diet or exercise plan. When considering New Year’s Resolutions, it is important to focus on setting attainable goals. A recent article from TODAY.com quoted Nathan Brandon, Psy.D saying “Pick something that resonates with you and aligns with your values so that you can stay motivated. Research shows that having a plan and setting achievable goals can increase the likelihood of success."

If you've had trouble sticking to resolutions in the past, you're far from alone.

“Even though many set resolutions, some research has suggested that under 10% of those setting resolutions feel they are successful by year’s end,” Dr. Ray W. Christner, Psy.D., licensed psychologist, CEO of Cognitive Health Solutions, LLC and co-host of the “Psyched to Practice Podcast," tells TODAY.com.

To help set yourself up for success, Christner says you should opt for "simple goals that can be done easily and that will have quick results."

From a diving perspective, good fitness and nutrition go hand in hand. A medical questionnaire is required to start any class to assess overall mental and physical health. Certain conditions may be considered hazardous to diving and should be evaluated by a physician.

So what are your goals? We have a couple of months before diving season really gets into the swing of things at the lake. What about starting out with some simple walking? Join a gym and swim some laps. Cardio is great for getting into shape for diving! Weight lifting is also perfect preparation for carrying all those tanks and gear around.

A Week In Paradise - Cayman Brac

Salt in My Ha ir and Sand on My Toes

In mid-October, I got the chance to slip away to the small Caribbean Island of Cayman Brac. There were 12 of us total, all from NW Arkansas, Eastern Oklahoma and the Kansas City area. We all share a love of the sea. Who doesn’t love a warm breeze and beautiful beach sunset with a tropical drink in hand? Throw in daily scuba diving in crystal clear water ranging in the upper 80’s and I’m your mermaid, I mean gal! We stayed at the Cayman Brac Beach Resort which offers “valet diving.” This basically means they set up your gear, help you in and out of your gear, and change your tanks for you after every dive. We had three buffet style meals every day with good food! The outdoor bar offered specialty drinks every day – a bit pricy, but hey “you’re on vacation!” The resort is situated right on the beach with a walk-in pool and hot tub. You can even relax on the beach in a hammock and watch the waves roll in.

I opted for the 3 dives a day package, because, well, I’m on vacation! We were paired up with Rozie and Yanni for the week as our personal Divemasters and tour guides. The dive briefings included color drawings with amazing detail. I was super impressed that they could draw all our dive sites completely from memory. We hit three unique sites a day, usually with a deep wall dive first then a shallower reef dive, breaking for lunch and then one more reef dive in the afternoon. There were tons of swim throughs, so I was in heaven! Others could follow along on top and meet up with the group or explore at their own pace. Several divers brought their personal DPV’s so finning was optional.

Visibility ranged from 60 – 150 feet, quite a big difference from the usual 20 feet at Beaver Lake! We also enjoyed water temperatures ranging around 88 degrees – no wet suit required! These warm temperatures also had a downside, as we saw quite a bit of coral bleaching. Our guides informed us when the water cools down, the corals should heal and return to normal, which is a relief, as it was sad to see so much white on the reef.

So what did we see? Lots of the colorful Caribbean fish you would expect, like grunts, butterfly fish, Lionfish, French and Queen Angels. We also were entertained by a Hawksbill Turtle and a couple of shy nurse sharks. On one of our dives, “Gary” the Grouper followed us around, showing us the reef, seemingly happy to have some company! We found huger lobsters and a couple of eels, lots of box fish and a few puffer fish. We even found my favorite, the juvenile drum!

They offered 2 night dives. I opted for the first night. I dove with a florescent light – oh my goodness! If you haven’t tried this, I highly recommend! It was like a disco party underwater! Everywhere I looked, the colors were amazing, with the reef jumping to life in neon! And the coral bleaching I mentioned earlier? It all appeared to light up like Casper the Friendly Ghost trails underwater. We dove Lighthouse Reef, which is the main reef in front of the resort complete with swim throughs and a turtle tucking in for the night.

My favorite dives were on Friday, when we made the trip to Bloody Bay Wall in Little Cayman. Mike’s Mount was easily one of the most beautiful dives. It is a wall dive, where we dropped down through a chimney to 70 feet and swam around a huge pinnacle – twice! We saw giant grouper, lobster, a turtle and huge barrel sponges. The reef in Little Cayman was in much better condition and left me wishing we could have stayed longer.

We finished our trip with a visit to the cliffs on the East side of the Island, for which the island is named after. The view was amazing, with a 141 foot drop to the ocean below. We made up a game of coconut bocce ball, enjoyed one more sunset and one more beautiful sunrise, and then made our way to the airport and back to the mainland and reality.

A Tribute to Jimmy Buffet - Tales From a Mermaid

Endless Summers, Frozen Concoctions, Sandy Beaches and “Drunken Caribbean Rock ‘N’ Roll !

Like most people, I woke up on Saturday morning, September 2, to learn Jimmy Buffett had passed away. It was the beginning of Labor Day weekend, the last big bash of the summer. I have to admit, it floored me. I felt a piece of my youth had passed away with him. I spent a lot of my college years singing along to Jimmy Buffett, knowing all the words to favorites like Margaritaville, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Come Monday, Fins, Changes in Latitude – Changes in Attitude, and It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere. I wouldn’t classify myself as a Parrothead, but I was lucky enough to see Jimmy Buffett a couple of times – once in Southern California at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, which was an incredible outdoor venue perfect for RV’s blaring island music and blenders mixing up the drink of choice - a margarita of course! I also got to see him last year in our own back yard at the Walmart Amp and experience the Fin Men!

To me, Jimmy Buffett lived a life I dared to live. I didn’t grow up near the ocean, but always loved the water. I moved to California and fell in love with the beach and the palm trees and salt air. I learned to scuba dive and even became an instructor. I visited Key West one summer. It was different, but the same. More laid back, miles from the mainland without a care in the world. I had a margarita in Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville. I strolled on the beach with my toes in the sand. I might have even had a cheeseburger. The point is, the beach made me happy and his music was part of that lifestyle.

I counted 6 Jimmy Buffett albums in my collection, including my favorite, “Songs You Know By Heart.” I tuned the radio to the Jimmy Buffett channel just to reminisce and I made myself a strawberry margarita as I sat down to write. I have read that it was fitting that Jimmy Buffett died on Labor Day weekend. Jimmy Buffett was the epitome of an endless summer. I’m always sad when summer is over because it’s my favorite as well. I would rather be sweating out by the pool, scuba diving in the lake, and running around in shorts and flipflops than snuggling under a blanket by the fire any day. But seasons change, and so do we. Summer will be here again soon. Until then, smooth sailing Jimmy Buffett. Thanks for all the fun summer memories.

Rescue Diver

Challenge yourself and take a leap into the PADI Rescue Diver Course!

The PADI Rescue Diver Course prepares you to deal with dive emergencies, both minor and major. Through knowledge development and rescue exercises, you learn what to look for and how to respond. During the scenarios, you put into practice your knowledge and skills.

You will learn:

Self-rescue
Recognizing and managing stress in other divers
Emergency management and equipment
Rescuing panicked divers
Rescuing unresponsive divers

Many divers describe the PADI Rescue Diver Course as the most challenging, yet most rewarding course they've ever taken. We offer this class a couple times throughout the summer season or upon request. Emergency First Responder (CPR/First Aid) is a pre-requisite to this class, current in the last 2 years.

The PADI Enriched Air Diver Course is PADI's most popular specialty, and it's easy to see why. Scuba diving with enriched air nitrox gives you more no decompression dive time. This means more time underwater, especially on repetitive scuba dives.

You can typically stay down longer and get back underwater sooner. No wonder many divers choose this as their first specialty!

We offer this class with e-learning and then an afternoon of classroom time. Once certified, we have nitrox tanks ready to check out for your first enriched air dive in Beave Lake.
